And Now, Wetwired’s Rules of Common Fucking Sense #1.

Wetwired Time Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at 6:09 am by Finley

Rule The First:

If someone calls 911 because of a fast food issue, that person shall be deemed a fucking idiot. Such behavior shall earn scorn and derision, and shall be treated with such.

Example #1- In which a fucking idiot calls 911 three times because McDonald’s did not have Chicken McNuggets.

Example #2- An older example in which a fucking idiot calls 911 because Burger King did not fix a Western Bacon Cheeseburger to the customer’s preference, and wanted the police to enforce the proper burger preparation.

New Writer

Wetwired Time Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at 1:46 pm by pylorns

You may or may not have noticed two new posts that popped up that were not contributed by myself, Beerslinger, or Finley.  Through our previous post requesting help we’ve actually found several writers that have expressed interest in writing for the site for the sum total of a religious experience.

While we will continue to review some of the other new writers we are happy to welcome Marie Mattis to our team.   She will be posting about any number of topics and will hopefully enlighten all of our readers.

Best Job in the World: Could Wetwired do it?

Wetwired Time Wednesday, January 21st, 2009 at 11:39 am by pylorns

Have you seen the ad or heard people talking about the dream job for the Tourist Department at Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia on Hamilton Island.
best_job_world

To apply for the job you need only create an interesting video with yourself in it, and talk about how you would be the best candidate for the job, dropping knowledge about the area or the Great Barrier Reef while you’re at it.   Like the type of sharks you’d most likely find – the white tip or the black tip  - and the fact that their population is dwindling due to over-fishing.

But really, what do you say that makes you stand out enough that they would pick you?  What do you do in your video? Does professional work on the video make a difference?  Do you have to be a model?

You obviously need to like photography, like to travel, and like to write about your travels.  You need to like water, know how to swim, like to dive or have a want to dive.   There is some flying involved with some drop offs and or pickups with the aerial postal service.

What the heck could be better than spending 6 months in a resort location where you have tons of activities to do, and all you have to do is blog about what you’re doing once a week?  Oh wait, the fact that you’re being paid around 100k USD? Yeah that’s right, you can take the vacation of a lifetime and all you have to do is write , take pictures, shoot some video.  Don’t most people do this already when they are on vacation?  I know I do.
pylorns_best_job_corona

I can picture me now on the sandy beaches camera in hand…

But seriously, I think the question really is, isn’t the tourism department is most likely looking for a hot person?  You know if its a chick she has to be a super model or a bond girl…

honey_rider

Ursula Andress (James Bond)

“Oh wow, I found a sea shell…”

and if its a guy, its what every woman would want, Bond…James Bond..

daniel-craig_james_bond

Daniel Craig is Bond, James Bond

Cause seriously, when I think about marketing a destination vacation, from a marketing perspective you want beautiful people.  But the problem is, the people that write beautiful prose (or even great blogs) are not always beautiful people.

Can you see this guy as the face of Queensland Tourism?

stephenking

Stephen King

Stephen King’s newest book: Save the Great Barrier Reef, or Die…..

Sure he could write an insane blog about all the things he saw(and I do mean insane), and I’m sure he could do it justice.  Not only that he could add a little blood, guts, and mystery to it to kick it up a notch.  But you really need two people to do this job.  One to be eye candy,  and one who can actually write more than two syllable phrases.

So I propose that they double the offer.  Let me (Average Joe, veteran blogger) go out there with whomever wins and be the guy behind the camera and the writing.  Let me take pictures of someone walking on the beach, and edit out things said like “ooooh a sea shell, I wonder if anything lived in this…”  or “Ooooooh  Navy Seals”.

And replace it with.  “As I walked along the pristine sandy beach devoid of any person in the waning daylight, I noticed a sea shell freshly washed upon the shore, its occupant long since passed. ”

And let me fly a couple of the sea planes, since yeah, I’m a private pilot too.

The Podcast- Update.

Wetwired Time Tuesday, August 19th, 2008 at 5:36 pm by Finley

I suppose I should start at the beginning- after all, that’s the most logical place.

We started the podcast in April with an intent to do so on a regular basis. For a time, we met that goal. Lately, however, things have changed. There has not been a full, real podcast in a while. The last two podcasts were composed of prerecorded material rather than our usual shenanigans.

Okay, part of that is on me.

Some of you are aware of this already, but I recently began a new position at The Job. Because of that, my hours have shifted dramatically and I am no longer available at night to record the podcast. On the weekend, my hours that I am awake have changed as well and I am no longer the one with the most reliable schedule.

Admittedly, that kinda sucks.

Combine that with a period of the year that I am normally a bit more introspective than extroverted, and the fact that the three of us have lives that don’t always correlate to each other, and you can see the issue.

The question then comes up- does the Podcast continue?

The short answer is yes- but with the understanding that it will be less frequent than in times past. We will have a new podcast soon- if we have to go back to a single voice at a time, we will have one. To go along with that, that voice would not (and should not) always necessarily be mine.

I am going to put this out there for the other authors on Wetwired- if you want to record a podcast or a segment of one and send it to me for mixing, I’ll be glad to put it out there. Pylorns, Beerslinger and I enjoy the hell out of doing these, but this does not mean that ours should be the only voices representing Wetwired.

The Podcast shall return. Bank on that.

Out.

Pardon our Mess

Wetwired Time Wednesday, July 16th, 2008 at 11:18 am by pylorns

This is a two-for-wednesday.  It would have been Tuesday but yeah… coding problems.

Number one:  As you can see wetwired has the new look that we promised.  I’ve been working on coding this for a while and given that I hate coding for wordpress, I think its turned out reasonably well.  There are slight issues with the sidebar and different browsers.  I’ll be continually working on it to try to address the issues that crop up.   Incedently if anyone is good with wordpres and divs and this stupid widgetized sidebar and can figure out why the twitter stuff loads 5 different ways from sunday on every browser, please let me know.

Number two: Wordpress 2.6 has been released.  This means new features for us, and maybe for you.  I tested slightly on our sandbox to verify all hell didn’t break loose and I’ve now updated wetwired to this latest version.  Let me know if you see something broken I might fix it, or I might laugh in your face.

Wetwired Studios and Podcasting

Wetwired Time Friday, April 18th, 2008 at 3:30 pm by pylorns

We’ll I’ve received my professional grade amateur microphone today via amazon. Bundled it comes with a pop filter but apparently those are on back order. Reason behind picking this up is that I needed a better quality microphone from what I had, and who knows, I might do some more phone voice over stuff like I have done before for other companies.  You know the voice behind the “press one for english” type stuff.

I now understand why there are so many books and gotcha’s out there about podcasting.  Sure if you’re just doing a single podcast for yourself its not that hard.  But if you want music, jingles, to use skype for a dual podcast – then enter the technical learning curve of quantum physics.  Ok maybe not that bad, but yeah, not easy.  Actually certain things are easier to do on a PC than a Mac when it comes to the podcasting, but the better software in terms of quality/editing seems to be for Mac.  I did come across some stuff made for PC that had additional items – i.e. ability to drop small sound effects and wav files into – I have not found that easy function on a mac yet.

I’m sure after some more time I’ll know everything there is to know about professional pod casting.  You see, when we do something, we want to make sure we do it well, not half assed.  I’ve listened to a couple other podcasts out there and some are good, but a lot lack that professional radio quality – excluding the ones that actually come from a professional source.

Here is a picture of the setup, microphone hooked up to the macbook.

Wetwired Time Sunday, March 16th, 2008 at 8:44 pm by Finley

“So, yeah, we had a good thing going for a long time there. But Movable Type, baby, we felt that love start to die inside and we couldn’t go on just for the posts.

Oh, don’t cry baby. It’s us, it’s not you. You’re beautiful, yes you are!

So yeah, you’re looking at our temp placeholding until we get the new site full launched. It’s not as nice as the old site, but it’ll do until we get everything up and running.
