In Memoriam: George Carlin, 1937-2008.

How appropriate that for a man who changed the use of language on our airwaves, I have no words to express the gratitude towards his genius.

To George, a man who provided some of the finest humor of the twentieth century and redefined what was obscene and what was not.

Ahem… In Memoriam, Charlton Heston- 1924-2008.

83 years old, passed away with his wife of 64 years by his side.

And from all accounts, a hell of a guy. Most people don’t know he was on the stage near Martin Luthor King Jr. during the “I Have A Dream” speech. Not a bad actor, either. He was a man who fought for the little guy, and he will be missed.

In Memoriam: Heath Ledger, 1979-2008.

I’m going to keep this to a minimum, as most of the details are sketchy at best and unknown mostly.

I will say this- he leaves behind a 2 year old child and a plethora of work, including a movie this summer that I have anticipated for a while. I can only hope that this was a tragic accident, and that it isn’t one of the worse possbilities.

I’ll post more thoughts on this once cause of death is revealed.

Oh God, No… In Memoriam, Richard Jeni 1961-2007

Wetwired Time Monday, March 12th, 2007 at 12:22 am by Finley

God, I hate this one.

Few people have made me laugh as much as comedian Richard Jeni. His 8 minute call to Bob and Tom shortly after 9/11 was one of the things that helped me find my sense of humor again after such abject tragedy. He’s responsible for some of the funniest, most biting comedy in the past two decades.

And now, he’s dead. Dead, of an apparent suicide.

I’m completely stunned by this. I would say I hope that it was an accident, because I hope to whatever God is out there that this man didn’t feel that ending his life was the only option. Saying that though seems crass, since it doesn’t change what happened.

All I can say is thank you, Mr. Jeni.

In Memoriam: Joseph Barbera, 1911-2006.

You may not recognize his name, but you’ll recognize his creations.

The Flintstones.

The Jetsons.

Yogi Bear.

Huckleberry Hound.

Tom and Jerry.

His works with William Hanna weren’t as well-known as Walt Disney’s, nor as popular, anarchic and irreverent as the Warner Brothers line of cartoons. That being said, these iconic cartoon characters beared a sweetness and appeal that so many others tried to emulate and failed. I hold a special place in my heart for his work, and he shall be missed.
