First they get rid of the ability to have dedicated servers. Now they are limiting the number of people who can play to 18. that’s right 9 vs. 9. Compare that with any other major FPS game that hosts 32 and 64man servers – this is a crock of poo.
A max of 18 players has been the norm for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of previous entries Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: World At War, but it’s considerably less than previous iterations for the PC.
McCandlish explained that an 18-player cap was related to “the number of players we focused on when we were balancing map size, perks, classes, challenges, etc.”
Here Infinity Ward had a chance to fix the screwup of COD5 by releasing a graphically pleasing great followup to COD4 – which gamers prefer over COD5 STILL – and they manage to cock it up with screwy limits on the multiplayer experience.
Just FYI – FPS games suck on console controllers. I’ll beat anyone on any FPS game if they have a console and I have a PC.
There are several petitions floating around, I urge PC gamers to go sign them.
Update: The plot thickens.
We thought the lack of dedicated servers was bad, but now we can add the lack of console commands, the inability to have a say in who hosts the game, a lengthy pause while the game migrates to a new host if the currently selected host quits, no leaning, no option to record matches, and no way to kick or block trouble players, hackers, or cheaters.
kaRMa: Please give me a direct answer. On the PC version. Are all games hosted by players, and is there a five-second delay when host migration is in effect?
Vince-IW: yes.Why is this a problem? Because Infinity Ward also revealed in the chat that the game will pick who hosts. You have no control over it. If the host leaves, there will be a five-second delay while the game picks the next best host. Players have no way of controlling who is hosting, and of course we know there will be no dedicated servers.
The host will of course have a ping advantage, which should be mitigated by the software “having a great tolerance for latency,” and a five-second pause if the host rage-quits before the game restarts will ruin any flow the game enjoyed until that point.
What’s more interesting is that they said ISPs will have to deal with you hosting games, even if there is language against running servers in their usage agreement. Infinity Ward’s response is that since this isn’t a “permanent” server, they have to deal with it. When someone else asked what would happen if their ISP throttled traffic that comes from running a server, they were told that “only players capable of hosting will host.”
They better hope that no ISPs get upset, because there is no way for any player to control who hosts. You can’t opt out of hosting. If the host quits, the game stops for five seconds while the next one is selected by the software. This is good for gamers… somehow.
Wow. Simply wow.
Update 11/9/09: Infinity Ward alludes to how they don’t give a crap about PC gamers.
“We have 14 million players on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare,” he said. “The hardcore gamers make up a smaller core of that, and PC gamers are the smallest group of that core”
Seriously, what is wrong with this company? Your rabid fan base comes from the “hard core gamers.” What happened to creating loyal raving fans?

I’m sorry, but I don’t really see the reason to get upset about this. I’ve been playing the PS3 version of the games for a while now, and this has been the norm for consoles for a while. If that’s the way the creator designs the game and you don’t like it, then it’s a reason to save 60 bucks right there.

OK, let me make this perfectly plain and simple, PC games are for “Gays”…… you are the minority, console games are easier for the average consumer to pick up and start playing, the player adapts easily to the game, thus the reason the game makers cater to these users. Not to mention you do not have to run out and buy the biggest baddest video card and processor each time you want to play a new version of a game, so that minimal pixilation occurs during the rendering of the flux capacitor in full 1080p………I know it doesnt make sense…..
Its a matter of money for these guys, and where the market share lies……not to mention console games kick ass, and PC gamers “suck balls!”

People like you used to play Counter Strike on the PC and made the rest of us look bad, but now that you have consoles you have an outlet for your ignorance. That’s the point, a bunch of skill-less newbie kids who think they have skills talking smack on their little Xbox live connection BS… I’d rather those lamers use consoles to play so the pro’s don’t have to deal with them in the PC world….
Console games are for lamers who can’t afford a decent computer or have enough skills to maintain such pc in order to play their games against those who can with real skills and experience.
console gamers= kids who got the system and game for xmas and will play it until the newness wears off.
pc gamers= pro’s with knowledge and experience who play it for the game and not just because it’s a fad.
This is the nerdiest arugment i’ve had in a long time.. MJ love ya,,, but still…. lame….

Well I am glad that you reconize the nerdiness and pure fun that is being had by this debate, I feel sorry for the “Gays” that still play on the computer, not a pity, but because I see the actual PC games dwindling….Yes there are a lot of the “Hardcore Gays” out there that will never secede to the console, just like there are some studios out there that will not conform to the Console community. Unfortunately those groups will become relics in a gaming arenas. But to each his own, I remember playing Wolfenstein when it first came out, and I recently picked it up for 360, and I was not impressed, yes it had the hollywood flair to it, but I never was able to get into the game, so there are pros and cons, yet I think that Consoles are by far the future, just a personal opinion.

I own every new generation console (Wii, XBOX 360 and PS3) and I have a very nice computer. I will take a game on PC almost everytime. I say almost because music games with dedicated controllers are made for consoles, however FPS games are far more precise at higher resolutions with Keyboards and mice. If consoles had the horsepower to play at a true 1900×1200 (better resolution than 1080P which they only extrapolate to anyway) and were allowed a keyboard and mouse function you may have an argument, but Microsoft and Sony like us buying controllers that really have no valid argument against a good keyboard and mouse player. The precision is just not there, and there goes the fun. Also limiting the play to 9v9 also showcases the weak points of a console. 64 player FPS games have been on PC for 3 to 4 years so I don’t see how this backwards step was taken other than they flat out ported their current game structure to PC. This in here lies the Rub. COD4 is a great PC game. It had a good (for a console) console alternative. Why was it the design to simply eliminate some of the best features of COD6? I know money money money money money.

My point, consoles are great for playing side scrollers. Hence the Reason Pit Fall, Street Fighter 2, Mario Brothers etc are sweet…. First person shooters, belong on a PC. consoles don’t have the computing power to handle them at a good resolution or high amount of players. 14 years ago Quake 1 was able to handle 32 players online.. Sad to see consoles still aren’t where the pc was 14+ years ago…. But it’s all about money. Parents don’t want to spend $800 bucks on a PC for their kids to play games when they can pay $200 for a console. Hence the reason the market is moving that direciton, it’s all about sales and money. So the games get dumbed down and new ones start getting turned out every 3 months once the new-ness has worn off. the majority of console game players are probably kids under 21 so they have to appeal to them and their short attention spans and the fact they have a hard enough time memorizing 6 buttons on a controler, i’d like to see the avg console player try and handle 15+ key binds in a PC FPS…

When I really feel like I want to go and kill aliens, I do not do it on my Console, I drive to Roswell and start shooting those insect looking mofo’s, I am saying follow your passion, and if you are a PC Gamer, I take it your passion is same sex marriage, good for you, I am not judging you (BTW another news story pylorns forgot about, Maine has resended same sex marriages, sorry PC Gamers)

I thought you played WoW Pylorns, but anyways really the sad truth to the situation is that the answer to the problem isn’t “I won’t buy the game” The only true way for PC gamers to win is to make it the most successful PC game to date and then demand the features we want. The not buying it arguement is great in theory but it is too easy for them to just argue that the only reason it didn’t sell was because of piracy or lack of interest in PC gaming and then they continue to develope more and more for the consoles.

Microsoft and Sony have both explored using kb and mice on thier consoles. But they realized that they could not keep the game play fair. Ps3 released quake that supports the kb and mouse but the servers are seperated by the types of user input. Controller users cannot make the percise movements required to keep up with the kb/mouse user. In pc terms they get thier ass pwned. They do sell devices that allow you to use kb/mouse on the consoles, so if any of you console fanboys want an ass kicking I would be eager to hand them out on your game of choice.
Consoles= good for the average person that lacks hand eye coordination.
Pc= for those that require precision and enjoy playing with the best.
