Second Day Red CD Release Post Review
posted by pylorns
I think all bands suffer from little issues when they do their first album. Second Day Red is no different in that aspect. Forgetting about Momo’s sound engineers issues last night, and the fact that the CD distributer botched up a batch of CD’s for them, and the fact that every time I tried to get a decent picture some ass-hat walked in front of my picture….the party went really well. What does make them different is their unique sound, and great collaboration.
All people who showed up at Momo’s for the party received a free CD and the band Second Day Red hopped up on stage and played through their songs. Unfortunatly the sound engineer seemed to have some issues, but, even with that, Second Day Red did not disappoint.
Stephen’s vocals are fairly wide, while he’s got a great low-end, he works a lot in the the higher register which will remind you of Billy Corgan, but not as grainy, and because he has a wide range you don’t get the feeling like he’s whineing like most of the Smashing Pumpkin Songs..so yes, considerably more unique.
Drew’s violin drops in key points in the songs and brings the quality of their music up a notch that they just wouldn’t have with out him.
Todd who is the keyboardist has some great melodies and helps drive the songs along, I actually wish in some of the songs I would have heard more harmony or a reiteration of the melody. Some of the songs that use an organ sound remind me very much of U2.
Frank aka (motorboat) never looses a beat, and if you listen you’ll hear some great cymbal work as some of the songs crescendo to a point - vocals, meet cybals, meet, fast violin, very cool.
And without Roel, we wouldn’t have the thump thump of the bass guitar and the subtle rhythms.
Notable songs - I’ve been out, Dark Green Light, Wake Up, Giving me away (I think they noted on stage that they liked this one), and Phoenix Tonight.
Influences: Better Than Ezra, Billy Corgan (vocals), U2, Dave Matthew’s Band, Blue October
Gallery of Strangers Album is available for purchase here. Or you can download it (.99 cents song) here.

Pyloms,
Let me introduce myself, I am the Lead Engineer and Production Manager for Momo’s Night Club. And I have a few concerns with the comments you have made. “Forgetting about Momo’s sound engineers issues last night” and “unfortunately the sound engineer seemed to have some issues”. We here at Momo’s strive for excellence and that’s including the Bar Staff and Sound Engineers. I have asked the staff and the owners about what may have happened that night and nobody seems to know. So it would be great on your end to tell what may have happened, and we can immediately look into fixing that situation so that your experience at Momo’s can be much better. I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you for your time,
James Duvall

Hey James,
We’re not really sure what was going on. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that momos sound engineers sucked, only that there were some “issues”. The main problem that I noticed was the vocals were not coming out very loud, and at times we could not fully hear him. The previous band that played everything sounded great, but when Second Day Red took the stage there were some strange issues where things didn’t sound right - we noticed several people walking around asking what the problem was and a sound engineer that kept walking in and back out to the patio to listen. Not only that several people walked by my table saying - “wow, I don’t know what is wrong with the sound tonight normally its great”.
So there you have it.

I was inside and noticed a similar problem. I even asked the chick at the bar and she said they were working on it.

I was there and have seen quite a few show sat Momo’s but this show was indeed not the best. We got there when the band before Second Day Red went on and when they started playing we noticed it was way way too loud inside, louder than we’ve ever heard it. We actually went outside with a few members from Second Day Red because it was in fact so loud. When we got outside the problems continued. We saw the sound engineer walking back and forth approximately every 5-8 minutes consistently for over an hour. I’m not sure why, I just know that I’ve never seen that first hand before so there were definitely some issues. When Second Day Red went up it still seemed louder than usual.

It was hard to hear Drew on vocals and I noticed the sound guy running around as if something was the matter.

My perspective was a bit different than some I’ve spoken to. I sat up front by the bar and was able to hear everything. Keep in mind, I’m used to loud music as I’ve been around bands that played loud. I’ve heard grumblings from friends about sound not being in check for the show, but once again I had a different view of the show. It’s obvious indoor sound and patio sound are going to be completely different. I’ve been to many of their shows and know some nights may be better than others. Overall, I really enjoyed their performance and was glad to be out. I’d do it all over again. I can say there were more remarks about the sound than normal. For me, I enjoyed the show, no pun intended.
