2 Starbucks Stores Closing in Austin

posted by pylorns

StarBucks

From here.  As many sites have reported that Starbucks is cutting back on its stores in an effort to stay profitable, 600 stores are supposed to be closed.  Initially they stated that Austin was not one of the locations that would be cut but apparently it is.

This of course is another sign of our down turning economy but not only that Austin is on the end cycle of this complete business boom with new growth.  If you go down Parmer Lane towards 1431 you’ll notice brand new businesses and new office spaces that are for lease that are just built.  Now, I fear they will sit empty for while as the economy continues to sour.   Actually I shouldn’t’ say that, we’re still in good shape here, we just grew too fast,  businesses need a chance to stop, take stock and re-evaluate.

South Congress and Academy (1007 S. Congress) – Austin
MoPac and Slaughter (5000 W. Slaughter) – Austin

Will be the 2 stores to be closed down.  To me, I really don’t care that much because Austin has plenty of Starbucks locations and not only that we have some really good local coffee shops that have a better atmosphere.  Comment if you know of some other really good local only coffee shops.

Can’t speak for the Congress Ave location, but the Mopac/Slaughter location was doomed from the start, given its inexplicable lack of a drive-thru. Slaughter/Escarpment has a drive-thru, which makes it much easier for people who want their venti without having to get the kids unbuckled and out of the car, just to have to strap them back in ten minutes later.

That sounds about right, I’m never south so I’ve never been to that location personally.

9 locations in Baton Rouge announced their closing this morning.

Great local coffee places: Thunderbird Coffee (koenig/woodrow), Jo’s Coffee (2nd st. or at san jose@congress), Little City (9th/congress), Genuine Joe’s (w. anderson ln)

They just built that new one out here at The Ranch in Cedar Park and they are set to build one at 183 & Crystal Falls Pkwy.

Guess us small town rednecks need our Starbucks more than they do downtown.

  6. snowed in Says:

Well, yeah…there are four other locations in the downtown area fairly close to the South Congress location already.

Why would anyone bother going to Starbucks in Austin when there are so many good local places with better coffee? I alternate among Ruta Maya on South Congress, Summermoon and Fair Bean on South First, and Cafe Caffeine on W. Mary.

Nancy: Thanks for the other local suggestions.

Man I used to stop on S. Congress on the way to work. Like someone else said there are a lot of options like I also pass the Dunkin Donuts on W. Stassney Lane. Whoops !! Did I say something that might be construed as offensive to Starbucks fans?
