Chocolate, like milk, does a body good.

Chocolate? I’m willing to be Nestle and Hershy are going to report record sales this quarter after this report.

MUNICH, Germany (AP) — There’s more good news for chocolate lovers.

Scientists have found that eating dark chocolate appears to improve the function of important cells lining the wall of blood vessels for at least three hours.

The study, involving 17 healthy young volunteers who agreed to eat a bar of dark chocolate and then get an ultrasound, found that eating dark chocolate seemed to make the blood vessels more flexible, which helps prevent the hardening of the arteries that leads to heart attacks.

But experts cautioned that the weight gain from eating a lot of chocolate probably would cancel out the apparent benefit.

Dark chocolate is rich in flavonoids, which act as natural antioxidants — chemicals that combat the damage oxygen does to the body. However, that does not mean that chocolate binges will ward off a heart attack, experts warn.

Cacao, the plant that chocolate comes from, has for centuries been used for everything from medicine to currency. Although enjoyed worldwide, until recently it was considered a treat that provided fat and calories but no substantial nutritional value.

Studies recently have indicated that it releases the happy chemical seratonin in the brain.

However, during the last few years, studies have suggested — much to the delight of chocoholics — that it is rich in flavonoids.

The latest study, conducted by cardiologists at Athens Medical School in Greece, set out to test whether chocolate affected the functioning of the so-called endothelial cells in the walls of the blood vessels, which are believed to be affected by oxygen damage and are considered a mirror of the overall health of the cardiovascular system.

The scientists, who presented their work Sunday at Europe’s most important cardiology conference, gave 3.5 ounces of either dark, bittersweet, chocolate or fake chocolate to 17 healthy volunteers.

On another day, the volunteers were switched. They had no chocolate outside of the study, and investigators did not know what each volunteer ate during the study.

An ultrasound was taken of each volunteer’s upper arm to see the functioning of the endothelial cells in the main artery. The cells accomplish their goal of controlling the stiffness of the blood vessel by secreting several active substances that regulate the flexibility of the vessel and influence clot formation.

“During the chocolate session, endothelial function was improved, whereas during the placebo day there were no such changes,” the study concluded. “The favorable effects of dark chocolate lasted for three hours at least.”

By improving the blood vessel flexibility in apparently healthy people, dark chocolate emerges as perhaps a power food, the scientists said.

“At this time, we do not know whether regular intake of dark chocolate or other cocoa beverages could result in a reduction of total cardiovascular” problems or death, the study said.

Experts warned against gorging on chocolate as a way to ward off heart trouble, reminding that excess calories lead to weight gain, which is a powerful trigger of heart problems. Any benefit to blood vessel flexibility would probably be wiped out by the danger of the weight gain, they advised.

Also, while antioxidants in theory help keep the heart healthy and looked promising in early research, recent rigorous studies investigating whether antioxidant pills such as vitamins A, C and E ward off heart attacks have shown them to be useless.

Dr. Michael Gibson, associate chief of cardiology at Harvard University-linked Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, said the chocolate study was “interesting.”

“There are a few basic science reasons why this might be good, but keep in mind that antioxidants also improved forearm blood flow but that didn’t necessarily pan out as an effective treatment,” said Gibson, who was not associated with the study.

A day for some 3 doors down

A Tuesday morning. Checking in at the RNC we find that Blogs for Bush was on Cspan. That’s pretty cool the way blogging is breaking out and everyday people are getting more influence because of their readerships.

MJ posts news of Kevin Smiths new project. Clerks 2.

- This isn’t gonna be a cameo-heavy affair, a’la “Strike Back.” The only returning characters are Dante and Randal, and Jay and Silent Bob.

- This isn’t gonna be a star-studded affair. The biggest names in the cast are gonna be Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, and Jason Mewes.

- This isn’t an “I’m not even supposed to be here today… AGAIN!”-heavy, wink-wink affair. We barely refer to the first flick (though I do love Lynch’s proposed tagline of “They Still Don’t Like You”; considering the tone of the script, an even more appropriate tagline would be “They Like You Even Less”).

- Jay and Silent Bob have about as much screen time as they had in “Clerks.” This is Dante and Randal’s flick all the way.

- The title makes sense. Sure, there’s a bit of cheekiness in there, but it’s pretty appropriate, based on the material.

- This is the funniest thing I’ve ever written. It’s also really poignant.

- We’ll still be making a “Clerks” cartoon movie, separate of this.

- This is not a grab at the green. Saying so is kinda laughable, if you’re privy to what I make per film now, vs. what I’ll make for this film. Part of the idea about doing “Passion” is to strip away the trappings of success we’ve been enjoying for the last few years, in an effort to get to the raw and pure. None of us are making our usual salaries on this flick; we’re all doing it favored-nations style, with deferments. If the flick does well, we’ll get paid our full-freight on the back-end. If not, we did it for the love. But if I was “all about the green”, I’d be gearing up for “Hornet” or “Fletch” instead. This one’s about the passion; the passion of the “Clerks.”

- Some of the key players from the “Clerks” saga who’ve already read the 143 page first draft: Mos, Jeff, Brian, John Pierson, Bob Hawk. Jay’s reading the new, refined 119 page second draft this week. Once they were all on board, any doubt or hesitation I might’ve felt about monkeying with the original’s legacy disappeared completely.

- This isn’t about “Jersey Girl.” While disappointed that we didn’t do double the theatrical business we crawled to, I understand why what happened to that flick happened (considering how poorly “Gigli” did, I consider us kinda lucky that we got to 25m). If this is a reaction to anything, it’s more of a reaction to “Green Hornet”, and the trajectory my budgets have been taking lately. Before (and if) I direct “Hornet”, I wanted to do something small and more me-like. While working on the “Clerks X” dvd, it became clear to me that “Passion” was the way to go.

- We almost did this flick three years ago, instead of “Strike Back.” I’m glad we didn’t, because I was able to say much more now than I would’ve then.

- There are gonna be lots of folks expressing disappointment or downright hostility with the idea of this movie. Let ‘em vent. If it’s all that bad, Xtian will just sweep it off the board. But the last thing I’m interested in is opinions on what I’m doing this early in the process, if at all. The beauty of making that first flick was being able to do it in a vacuum. Granted, I could’ve kept my mouth shut about it ’til we were done shooting; but with “Clerks X” coming out, it just felt right to share. Regardless - I don’t want folks running here with reports of what’s being said about the idea of this film at other boards. Don’t waste your/my time with the braying of the jackasses. There’s not even a movie to bray about yet. Once there is, if you still still feel the need to tell me what some random, knuckle-headed Talk Backer has to say about the finished product, then God bless. But until then, leave it in the locker room.

- Oh, who am I kidding? This flick makes me so happy, I’m not even bothered by the bitching (could still be even happier without it, though). I’m in love with this flick. If other folks aren’t, I can’t really say I’m concerned. I’ve read the script; they haven’t. I have the benefit of insight into the flick beyond the title and the notion of it; they don’t. The reaction is pretty much what I thought it’d be: a ton of positive, and minimal amount of bitching. Even if the equation was reversed, I’d still feel as good as I do now.

- At this point in my life, this flick makes absolute fucking sense.

- I can’t wait to shoot it, and I can’t wait ’til you all see it.

Slow updates

Aparently things are going so slow with the lack of internet setup and things getting going that Kevin at Wizbang has to post about what is happening outside the event.

There’s plenty of action outside the convention hall, as well as inside. Right across the street from the entrance to MSG local artist Stephen Stoller is painting the cityscape as I write this. He’s got an award winning series of Ground Zero paintings at his site, which is very well done. I talked to him for a few minutes - he paints all over the city [Ed - He must have some connections since he was well inside the security zone] and plans on doing another painting later in the week.

Apparently life outside the RNC media bubble proceeds unabated…

Olympics..

With everything coming to a halt. I thought i’d post an email I got this morning from a parental unit.

It’s like they’ve got eleven Dicks on the field.”

10. US Open TV Commentator: “One of the reasons Arnie Palmer is
playing so well is that, before each final round, his wife takes
out his balls and kisses them… Oh my God, what have I just
said?”

Man Decapitated In Bizarre Wreck
Police Say Driver Kept Going

A Cobb County man is charged in a car wreck in which his passenger was decapitated.

Police say John Kemper Hutcherson, 21, was driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday night when his truck struck a utility pole. His passenger, Francis Daniel Brohm, was partially ejected. His head was severed by the pole’s support wire, police said.

But police say Hutcherson continued home and went to bed, covered in blood. A neighbor walking with his baby spotted Brohm’s body hanging out of Hutcherson’s truck about 8 a.m. Sunday, said Cobb County police Cpl. Dana Pierce.

Hutcherson was treated for dehydration before being booked at the county jail. He is charged with vehicular homicide.

Three Years In

Today’s a pretty big milestone for me, folks.

See, three years ago today- about this time, in fact- I pulled into town and began my new life here in Austin. I knew a grand total of two people.

Three years later, a lot has changed. I’ve been on my own for a long while. I’ve made friends that have lasted and grown close to several people. I’ve seen a couple of friends turn into a family of their own. I’ve seen two people who were close get torn asunder by their own feelings. I’ve seen changes at work and at home.

I’ve taken chances, both professionally and personally. Those professional chances have worked out so far. The personal ones… well, not always.

Most importantly though, I’ve sen new horizons presented to me and I’m aching to move further ahead.

It’s been a fun three years. Bring on the next thirty.

Out.

Kevin Smith fears directing `Green Hornet’

BY MIKE SZYMANSKI

Zap2it.com

LOS ANGELES - Citing the failure of his biggest budget movie to date, “Jersey Girl,” director/writer Kevin Smith says he’s writing the big screen version of “The Green Hornet” but probably won’t direct it.

“I’m writing Green Hornet now, I’m 50 pages from the end of it, but I don’t think I’m going to direct it,” Smith tells Zap2it.com. “I’ve got cold feet after doing `Jersey Girl’ with the biggest budget I’ve ever had, something like $35 million bucks and that was big for me. The notion of making something more expensive that I could serious f— up on is pretty unnerving.”

At a Buena Vista Home Entertainment party where he was touting the 10th anniversary DVD release of “Clerks” and the release of “Jersey Girl,” the self-deprecating director says, “We spent a lot of time and did a lot of work on `Clerks’ because I’m finally making money on that at the back-end. I don’t expect to see a dime for `Jersey Girl.’ ”

“Jersey Girl” stars his friend Ben Affleck and has a brief appearance by Jennifer Lopez, who was dating the star at the time. On the DVD, Smith says, “Ben and I are interviewing each other about what went wrong in our respective careers.”

Meanwhile, Smith says Miramax chief Harvey Weinstein is encouraging him to leave his options open for directing the action superhero “Green Hornet” film, based on a comic book that Smith collected as a kid. “I appreciate the shot, but right now I’m not inclined to invite the stress,” Smith says. “And who knows if Miramax will be around when they’re supposed to shoot in April ‘05?”

He thinks he may return to his indie roots doing movies about people getting together and talking about sex. Smith adds, “I don’t get me doing an action flick.”

The Meaning of Life

What is it to you?

They say the point of living is to feel, to have emotion, to love. To hate. To have passion. This is what drives us, what gives us hope. What we define as human spirit.

I say they are right. We who shine so bright are thus gifted in our relatively short span on this planet. To think that we go on forever without purpose is ignorance. Why would we live such a short fulfilled existence and not have a true purpose after existence?

Maybe we can summarize and hypothesize so much but in the end, we truly will know. And our spirit, our hope that something afterwards is what drives us to lead better lives.

I say that if you have not loved, then you have not truly lived. And if you have not lived then how can you die in peace, in fulfillment?

So for today, find that special person. Tell them you love them. If you haven’t found them yet, keep searching. You don’t have a long time so make the most of it, because we that shine so brilliantly only last but a blink of an eye in geological time. Like a dear friend told me once, we leave footprints in each others souls; in the lives we effect if even for a moment. So make it last.
