Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch…

I’ve spent the last few nights after work watching the new Dennis Miller show on CNBC, and so far I have to say my interest is piqued. There’s a bit of work that needs to be done to polish it off a bit more, but so far the format is pretty nice. A few minutes of the classic Miller standby of the daily news, an interview or two with a newmaker or knowledgeable guest, and what he calls his “Varsity Squad” of intellects, humorists and talk-show guests from both sides of the political spectrum to discuss the issues of the day. So far, I’ve made a few opinions of the show:
- Miller has truly taken the 180 from his years on HBO pre-9/11 and has become quite the conservative thinker on several issues. Not to say he’s completely falling within the entire traditional conservative ideology, but it’s interesting to see how several of his beliefs and ideals have changed.
- The chimp has got to go. I get it- he’s making a reference to a classic television reference (Look up the Today show archives, and you’ll see what I mean). But the monkey distracts and ultimately annoys.
- I want a Howard Dean Scream button.
- Naomi Wolf is never more attractive than when she is laughing hard at something that has tickled her. She’s a beautiful woman, but when she laughed on Thursday’s episode she floored me. Also, while I disagree with her politically I would LOVE to get into a serious discussion with her on a number of issues. Quite an intelligent lady, that one.
- David Horowitz is THIS close to being all-around completely annoying. Sad to say, since he’s one of the staunchest conservatives I’ve seen on an NBC channel.
- Miller himself does quite well without a live audience- surprisingly well, in fact. The guy is perfect for the format, if they can get rid of some of the cute affectations. (I’m looking squarely at the chimp here.)
I loved the run Dennis Miller had on HBO, but this may prove to be the show that gives him the best opportunity to show what he can do. Plus, his audience has been pretty strong. Here’s to the success of the show.
