Mistaken Identity
posted by RokynRobynI am one of those people that people think they know. “I know you from somewhere.” Or, “You look really familiar.” I get that all the time.
I have never claimed to be a supermodel, but for the past 2 years, I have reminded people of unattractive people! Here is the scenario: I’ll be walking down the hall to my office and someone will yell, “Sandy!” When I turn, they say, “Oh, sorry, Robyn. I thought you were Sandy.”
Sandy is a mid-40s mother of three. She has dirty blonde hair and grey blue eyes. She never wears makeup or styles her hair. She dresses very casually and could adequately be described as “frumpy.” Her table manners are atrocious and her overall demeanor is sloppy. She drives a minivan for crying out loud! She is a lawyer, very quit-witted, and a master at Name That Tune. Often I perceive her to be one of those book smart people who is lacking common sense, but I truly admire her wit.
I’ll admit that we have the same build, both wear glasses, and I dress casually as well. But, c’mon, people! I spend a fortune having my hair highlighted 4 different colors. I get manicures religiously. I would die before coming to work without makeup. I drive a Trans Am and in my 20s, albeit clinging at 29. But, STILL!
I don’t expect people to yell “Britney” or “Elle” at me, but damn — there’s only so much an ego can take.
