Cancel the Cable

posted by pylorns

This lady talks about canceling tv. Here is an excerpt of her post I found pretty interesting.

Several months ago I canceled my cable–because of Joe Dominguez who, in his wonderful book from the 70s Your Money or Your Life, pointed out that how we spend–our money, our time, our resources–should reflect our real values in life. I thought about the 40 bucks for the cable and realized I didn’t value it that much.

(By the way, the numbers in Joe’s book are dated, but the methodology he explains is still just as valuable for evaluating your spending.)

So the question is, what would you do if you canceled cable? For me not only would I no longer have cable, I’d no longer have an internet account. What things would be different in your life? How much time do you spend in front of the TV? How dependent is our society on tv and cable in general?

I think most of us would have an hour or more extra time every day to get things done we’ve neglected because we were either too lazy at the time, or had a show that was more entertaining that what we needed to get done. A lot of people use the excuse that they were too busy to get something done, when chances are they were too busy with that important TV show. What effect does that TV really have on your life?
