People just don’t listen
posted by pylornsI work in the tech support industry, so I deal with people from all walks of life on a daily basis. Unfortunatly its all over the phone. I swear some days I wish I could reach through the phone and strangle them. I talk to people that don’t listen to you and do what they want to do while your on the phone. Some people don’t pay attention to what I say and have me repeat my instructions twenty times. I kid you not.
Today is no exception, I’m talking to this guy who just does stuff and doesn’t tell me what he’s doing. “Ok have you rebooted to the windows cd?” I ask.
“Oh yeah, and I’ve already started the emergency repair.”
“Whoa, whoa, did I ask you to do that?”
“Oh, no I thought you wanted me to do that.”
“No. I want to run a chkdsk on hard drive first.”
“Oh, I’ll have to restart then.”
This particular guy just likes to do what he wants to do, and not take my advice.
“Go ahead and reboot the computer by powering it off since its going so slow…”
“No, I’ll just wait until the start button comes up.”
“No, No, just reboot it now to speed things along.”
“I want to shut it down smoothly.”
“I would like to get this fixed in a timely manner, if you wait we’ll be sitting on this phone for 30 minutes.”
I wait for a bit, he doesnt say anything.
“Where are we at sir?” I ask.
“Oh, I’ve rebooted and I’m running the diags”
I get angry.
“Sir, you are calling me to help you are you not? I need you to go through the steps I ask you to do, so we can resolve this in a timely manner. When you go ahead of me and do something you think is the right thing you’re just increasing the time it takes to determine and fix the problem.”
“Ok.”
The line goes dead…
Why waste my time? If you think you know the answer, then fix it yourself, don’t bother calling me. I have better things to do, like running a website.
