Repost from dateproject Kite and String.

Interesting view about relationships from this website: http://blog.thosemoes.com/ I actually hit this from another site that was talking about it. But the jist of the whole article is interesting.

“On the way to work this morning, I was thinking about this theory I heard once about how in every relationship there is a Kite and a String. The theory, which I will now attempt to bastardize in my flaky retelling, is that there is always one person who is the wilder, looser, more adventurous part of the two, The Kite. Then there is The String, who invariably is the one who keeps the Kite anchored, who saves the Kite from getting caught up in high winds and flying away. Of course, without the Kite to pull the String forward and stretch it, it simply lies in a pile, a rather uncompelling exsistience. The Kite gives the String purpose and shows it what it’s like up there in the wind. The String helps the Kite out when things get too dicey up there.

The idea is that a person is usually intrinsically one or the other and that Kites attract Strings and Strings attract Kites. Sometimes, two of a kind end up together and then they either battle it out, learn to alternate or completely implode. I have always been The String and naturally, most of the men I’ve dated have been Kites.

It’s a pretty basic metaphor, but I remember I liked it at the time I heard it and therefore was moved to tell everyone I knew about it.

I first shared it with Ally and my then-boyfriend Joey (now my Kite Life Partner) over lunch one day in a somewhat loud restaurant. We were discussing a couple we knew that we’ll now refer to as “Mr & Mrs Chaos”. As they were both rather spirited people, we were having a hard time figuring out who the Kite was, and who was the String.

Ultimately, we decided that they alternate, but that epiphany followed a long conversation in which the phrase, “Mr(or Mrs) Chaos is totally a Kite” was uttered over and over again. After we noticed that the people seated next to us had gotten rather quiet, Ally realized “Oh my god, they probably think we’re calling Mr Chaos something else*. We keep saying ‘Kite’ over and over again. They probably think we’re having a very different kind of conversation!”

To which we all started laughing uncontrollably, only further alienating the people next to us.”
